30 Day Organic Vegan Challenge

I can tell that 2013 is going to be a pretty exciting year full of big changes! One thing that I’ve wanted to do for a long time is eat mainly organic food and another is to officially cut out dairy. This is why I am doing a 30 Day Organic Vegan Challenge.

To ensure the success of the challenge, I am making some easy to follow guidelines. If you’d like to join me, please do! We can discuss progress via twitter and share recipes :) Anybody looking to join in is very welcome!

My first food stock up!

I plan on starting on Thursday the 3rd of January and the official challenge end date will be the 1st of February. I’m hoping that I enjoy it so much that I can continue the lifestyle.

Here are the guidelines:

  • No Dairy – milk, cheese, eggs, yogurt, ice cream etc
  • No meat or fish
  • 80-90% organic fruit and vegetables
  • Organic moisturiser and hair products
  • Mineral makeup when possible (young blood foundation)
  • Organic, natural deodorant
  • 1 x Cheat meal per week that must be organic and dairy free
  • Try to have three ultimate health smoothies per week (RECIPE COMING)
  • Coffee is ok but must also be organic
  • Home made cleaning products instead of chemical ones
  • No soft drinks
  • Print out your 30 day challenge planner and mark off each day as you go [30 Day Planner Here]

What I’m hoping to achieve:

Eating an organic diet has always seemed very unattainable due to the price. I plan to sacrifice spending money on clothing and completely cut out unnecessary purchases in order to afford to do this! Check out my ‘Cheap Ways to Eat Organic Food‘ post.

I am hoping that I will discover ways to incorporate more organic food into my diet in every day life after the 30 days. Perhaps I will be more motivated to take care of my vegetable garden.

Also, any weight loss will be a bonus as I am going on a trip to Cairns in February and would like to be in great shape for that as I’ll be in swimwear every day.

What YOU could achieve:

You could lose weight and have more energy! If you live in the USA or UK you will probably find that eating organic food isn’t ridiculously expensive and could almost be an easy switch?

Less pesticides and chemicals ingested could give you better overall health and give you a sense of accomplishment!

How to start?

Visit your local Wholefoods, Flannerys or equivalent and stock up on everything you need. A trip to your local organic markets on the weekend will help you save money on produce while supporting your local farmers.

Print out my FREE 30 day challenge planner and make a 100% commitment to completing the challenge.

How To Make Your Own Green Cleaning Products

As part of my new 2013 lifestyle, I’m switching all of my household cleaners to home made, non toxic and green alternatives. This is something I’ve thought about doing for SO long but have never gotten around to doing it.

The benefits?

  • Cheaper
  • Better for your health
  • Better for the environment
  • No toxic fumes
  • Easy to make!
  • No animals harmed

Ingredients:

SUPPLIES
Baking soda
Washing soda
White distilled vinegar
A good liquid soap or detergent (organic, eco friendly)
Tea tree oil
6 clean spray bottles
2 glass jars

CREAMY SOFT SCRUBBER

Simply pour about 1/2 cup of baking soda into a bowl, and add enough liquid detergent to make a texture like frosting. Scoop the mixture onto a sponge, and wash the surface. This is the perfect recipe for cleaning the bathtub because it rinses easily and doesn’t leave grit.

Note: Add 1 teaspoon of vegetable glycerin to the mixture and store in a sealed glass jar, to keep the product moist. Otherwise just make as much as you need at a time.

WINDOW CLEANER

1/4-1/2 teaspoon liquid detergent
3 tablespoons vinegar
2 cups water
Spray bottle

Put all the ingredients into a spray bottle, shake it up a bit, and use as you would a commercial brand. The soap in this recipe is important. It cuts the wax residue from the commercial brands you might have used in the past.

OVEN CLEANER

1 cup or more baking soda
Water
A squirt or two of liquid detergent

Sprinkle water generously over the bottom of the oven, then cover the grime with enough baking soda that the surface is totally white. Sprinkle some more water over the top. Let the mixture set overnight. You can easily wipe up the grease the next morning because the grime will have loosened. When you have cleaned up the worst of the mess, dab a bit of liquid detergent or soap on a sponge, and wash the remaining residue from the oven. If this recipe doesn’t work for you it is probably because you didn’t use enough baking soda and/or water.

ALL-PURPOSE SPRAY CLEANER

1/2 teaspoon washing soda
A dab of liquid soap
2 cups hot tap water

Combine the ingredients in a spray bottle and shake until the washing soda has dissolved. Apply and wipe off with a sponge or rag.

FURNITURE POLISH

1/2 teaspoon oil, such as olive (or jojoba, a liquid wax)
1/4 cup vinegar or fresh lemon juice
Mix the ingredients in a glass jar. Dab a soft rag into the solution and wipe onto wood surfaces. Cover the glass jar and store indefinitely.

Tea Tree Treasure

Nothing natural works for mold and mildew as well as this spray. I’ve used it successfully on a moldy ceiling from a leaking roof, on a musty bureau, a musty rug, and a moldy shower curtain. Tea tree oil is expensive, but a little goes a very long way. Note that the smell of tea tree oil is very strong, but it will dissipate in a few days.

2 teaspoons tea tree oil
2 cups water

Combine in a spray bottle, shake to blend, and spray on problem areas. Do not rinse. Makes two cups.

Vinegar Spray

Straight vinegar reportedly kills 82 percent of mold. Pour some white distilled vinegar straight into a spray bottle, spray on the moldy area, and let set without rinsing if you can put up with the smell. It will dissipate in a few hours.

Cheap Ways To Eat Organic Food in Australia

One of my new years resolutions this year is to incorporate more organic food into my diet. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do but could never afford to spend so much extra money on certified organic produce.

This year, I plan to deal with the extra cost and give up some of my unnecessary purchases. I don’t know about you, but I have this weird habit of buying a new dress every time I have a big event on. It just seems like the thing to do though? Big event = new outfit. I’m ashamed at how wasteful I have been as I have lots of nice perfectly fine dresses in my closet that I have only worn a few times. Other than that, I am generally a pretty frugal person but this is one habit that I will happily give up if it means better health!

Organic food prices in Australia are very high. I’m not sure how it compares to other countries but I have a feeling that we are paying even more than everyone else. This seems to be the case for most cosmetics and clothing too – I buy most of my things online now because of how much cheaper it is!

Anyway, back to the main point of this blog post. How to buy organic food in Australia ‘on the cheap’.

1. Shop at Aldi – Aldi has their own range of organic products that are pretty comparable in price to the non organic version!
2. Stock up if there is a special offer
3. Grow your own herbs, fruit and vegetables – I’ve got a pretty decent herb garden at the moment, mainly due to the fact that herbs are basically impossible to kill and can survive all of my neglect. Surprisingly, I’ve managed to harvest 3 tomatoes from my garden (six months of hard work really does pay off). If you’re a good/not lazy gardener, why not plant your own food?
4. Use organic coconut oil in place of cooking oil, moisturiser and hair treatment!
5. Check ebay and other online stores for organic cosmetics and compare the price before buying
6. Famers’ market – keep your eye out for end of the day specials! The organic farmers’ market will generally be cheaper than the organic produce from Woolworths or Coles!
7. Shop at Flannery’s (Mrs Flannerys Organic) on the first Saturday of every month – Flannerys has a ‘Supasaver Saturday’ and has lots of heavily discounted items. ‘Flannery’s Own’ is generally cheaper than other brands and the packaging is BPA free too! Don’t forget to keep an eye out in the specials basket too.

How to justify spending more?

Try to think of it as an investment into your health.

Less preservatives and pesticides = less sickness.
Less sickness = less money spent on medicines and health care
Less sickness = less time off work so more money earned
Healthier diet = better quality of life, longer life and a more vibrant and happier you!

What about alcohol?

Believe it or not, there IS such a thing as organic alcohol. Instead of going for a premixed drink that is packed with sugar and preservatives  try out an organic wine instead.

I plan to have a few drinks this New Years Eve so will be celebrating the New Year and getting a head start on my organic lifestyle at the same time ;)

Here’s a list of organic alcohol available at Dan Murphys.

How To Lose Weight Before The Weekend?

Whenever I have a party or event on the weekend and I’m feeling a little frumpy and bloated, I tend to increase my cardio and lower my salt and dairy intake.

This doesn’t make me lose actual weight but does help give a slimmer appearance and reduce bloating. I also get a spray tan! You’d be amazed at the difference tanned skin can make.

Here’s a video by youtube weight loss guru Sarah Dussault who gives her top five ‘weight loss by the weekend’ tips and explains how and why the tips work!

Kim Kardashian’s Corn Kernel Diet

It’s been a while since I posted some recent Kardashian photos. Kim and Khloe were spotted in Miami recently and weight-wise are looking the same as normal.

There has been a weird rumour circulating that Kim Kardashian has started eating her corn one kernel at a time (in an effort to lose weight).

Celebrity Diet: Erin Heatherton’s Diet and Exercise Regime

Victoria’s Secret model Erin Heatherton was spotted shooting a VS campaign in St Barts recently. Erin follows a gluten-free diet and has added more protein into her diet after meeting Cindy Crawford.

How Does Erin Heatherton Work Out?

Erin is a big fan of yoga and is often spotted attending classes. Her workouts get a little more intense in the lead up to the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show and more cardio is incorporated.

Here is a beginner’s yoga workout if you’d like to give it a go:

What Diet Does Erin Heatherton Follow?

Erin follows a gluten free diet and eats clean wholesome food.

‘I met Cindy Crawford once and she said something to me I’ll never forget…

She said it’s really not always about working out the most important thing is about what you eat. That really changed my perspective’

When asked about her diet Erin replies ‘I love fish and chicken and I’ll eat bacon too sometimes. I’ll cheat on meat and cheese. I workout and eat right, I can’t be too hard in myself about making mistakes and whatever.’

Mason Jar Smoothies and Green Juice

I am OBSESSED with mason jar smoothies and juice. They are so handy to keep in the fridge! Anybody with a high powered blender such as a vitamix or blendtech (froothie works too, cheaper Australian version) can whip up a huge batch of nutrient packed juice and pour it into jars to drink throughout the day.

Last night I had a ‘hankering’ (haha what a weird word!) for a mango boost smoothie. I attempted to recreate it and it turned out to be quite delicious.

Ingredients:
Ice
Fresh Mango
Banana
Passionfruit pulp (I used a tin)
Mango frozen yogurt
Skim milk
