Healthy Breakfast Options

What are you currently eating for breakfast?

If you are looking to lose weight you might need to rethink your first meal of the day. First of all, breakfast is essential! It kickstarts your metabolism so you start burning fat throughout the day.
When Im in the cereal isle at the supermarket I try to be extra careful with what I pick. I definitely don’t trust what the box says anymore.

Try to avoid cereal that is high in sugar. For weight loss it’s best to go with something wholesome and slow release. I avoid toasted muesli and granola because believe it or not it can actually be quite fattening.
Go for a raw muesli, rolled oats or a bran cereal. You can always add some honey and fruit if you don’t find it tasty enough!

Here’s a list of delicious and guilt free breakfast options

  • All Bran cereal with sliced banana (kiwi fruit, strawberries and blueberries go nicely with it too)
  • Muesli with fruit and natural yogurt
  • Rye toast with vegemite (avocado, tomato and capsicum on rye toast is amazing)
  • Oats with honey
  • Wheatbix – My personal fave at the moment. I drizzle a bit of organic honey on top. If Im going to have honey I use milk instead of water
  • Breakfast smoothie! There are so many options! Add fruit/natural yogurt/honey/ice/raw sugar/oats/flaxseed oil/milk/soymilk. Whatever you feel like!
  • Protein pancakes
  • Eggwhite Breakfast Burrito

I eat my cereals with soy yogurtin or milk every morning stead of normal yogurt/milk. This is a very healthy option, and you also get in every grocery store “light soya milk” so you donĀ“t need to take the full fat one :)

I always thought i had a very healthy breakfast. While the foods i ate were good for me i counted the calories to be 800+ and was stunned.
I still eat the same foods but in very different amounts.
I have a banana sliced and layer banana then a spoonful of bran then more banana and a spoonful of dorset cereal muesli. I add what is left of the banana and top with a teaspoon of linseed/pumpkin/sunflower seed mix. I’ll add blueberries if they’re in season and on special offer at the store
- 1 banana
- 1 spoon bran flakes
- 1-2 spoons high qulity low sugar muesli
- 1 teaspoon sunflower/pumpkin/linseed mix

For a snack i have soya yogurt, plain cashew and walnuts, and unsweetened dried fruits – in very small portions. This is light on my stomach so ideal if you go to the gym (i eat this at breaktime during lectures then head to the gym after class)

Some smoothies i make often
-soya yogurt, banana, strawberries
-vanilla soya yogurt, peanut butter, banana
-pineapple, ginger, lemon sorbet
-watermelon, pear, peach

About a year ago i decided to once and for all get rid of the weight i had put on in the last few years so i starte just eating really healthy and making my meal times more structured – 3 meals, 2-3 snacks a day and no junk. But i didnt lose any weight and i was getting really frustrated. I think it was making pasta one evening and the box said x mount of calories per serving and when i weighed out one ‘serving’ it was insanely small and about one sixth of what i would have for a normal meal so this really opened my eyes because i thought my portion sizes were good. So when i had breakfast the next day i thought ‘i wonder how many servings of this i eat in one go…’
It’s a bad idea to start weighing out eveery single meal you have but with a new product have a look at how much you would normally have and weigh that out and compare it to how much you should be having. I have a small bowl a bit bigger than what you’d get if you ordered salad dressing on the side and it fits about the amount of cereal i shoul be having so i just fill that – no measuring, no paranoia – just a little bowl

i love egg white omelettes
here is a recipe for a herb and spinach one but you can put anything in them (eg tomato, carrot, etc):

Ingredients:

* 3 egg whites
* 1 tablespoon nonfat milk
* 1/2 tsp dried mixed herbs
* Freshly ground black pepper
* 3/4 cup chopped fresh baby spinach
* 1 tablespoon reduced-fat shredded sharp cheddar or grated parmesan

Preparation:
Combine egg whites, milk and herbs in a small bowl. Coat a small nonstick skillet with cooking spray. Heat the skillet on medium to low heat. Add chopped spinach. As it wilts, pour egg white mixture over the spinach and allow to set around the edges. As the edges set, lift them gently with a spatula and tip the skillet to allow remaining liquid underneath. When the egg whites are set, sprinkle the cheese on top, then fold the omelet in half. Serve immediately.
